Introduction. The urgency of the problem of medical education is determined by the need to improve the effectiveness of training medical personnel capable of successfully meeting the challenges of the time. The aim of the study. Identification of the main stages of the development of medical education in our country and analysis of its current state and development prospects. Material and methods. The methodological basis of the work was historical-system, problem-chronological methods, as well as methods of analysis and processing of statistical information. The literary basis of the work was research on the history of Russian and Soviet medical education. Results and discussions. The author identifies the main stages of the development of medical education in Russia, traces the dynamics of changes in the system of training medical personnel. The author identifies the key problems of modern medical education, based on the analysis of statistics, identifies the achievements and shortcomings of the system of training medical personnel. Conclusions. The author comes to the conclusion that the effectiveness of the training of medical personnel in our country will depend on how much specialists will be able to meet the challenges of the time.
